Sustainability

The Whole Cod

At Icewater Seafoods, sustainability begins with how we use the resource.

We are committed to maximizing the value of every fish we process—ensuring that as much of the cod as possible is utilized across a range of high-quality products. This approach reduces waste, improves efficiency, and supports the long-term economic viability of the fishery.

Our production processes are designed to balance yield, quality, and responsible resource use—ensuring that every fish harvested delivers maximum value to harvesters, workers, and markets.

Our Promise

Icewater Seafoods has consistently supported a science-based approach to fisheries management.

For many years, even while operating below full capacity, we advocated for a cautious approach to increasing cod quotas—prioritizing the long-term health of the stock over short-term gains.

This approach reflects our belief that:

  • A healthy resource is the foundation of a sustainable industry

  • Responsible management builds long-term market confidence

  • Sustainability is essential to maintaining premium global customers

Supporting the Future of Cod

We are actively involved in Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs) that support stock recovery, scientific research, and long-term sustainability certification.

These initiatives bring together industry, scientists, and international customers to:

  • Improve data and understanding of cod stocks

  • Strengthen fisheries management practices

  • Support the path toward globally recognized sustainability standards

Through these efforts, Icewater Seafoods is helping ensure that Newfoundland and Labrador cod is positioned for long-term success in global markets.

Responsible Operations

Sustainability also means improving how we operate every day.

Our facility investments—including a major modernization completed in 2020—have improved efficiency, reduced energy use, and enhanced production processes.

We continue to look for opportunities to:

  • Improve energy efficiency

  • Reduce water usage

  • Optimize production systems

  • Minimize waste

Small Town,
Big Impact

Our sustainability commitment extends beyond healthy fish stocks and oceans. We are also committed to sustainable employment in a sustainable community.

Icewater Seafoods is the largest employer in Arnold’s Cove, providing more than 250 jobs – 320 during some months – in a town of fewer than 1,000 people. The stability of those jobs supports families, local businesses, and the broader regional economy.

We are committed to:

  • Providing stable, near year-round employment

  • Offering wages and benefits above industry averages

  • Supporting a skilled, experienced workforce

By maintaining consistent operations, we help ensure that the benefits of the fishery are felt directly in the communities where people live and work.
